"When you are writing, pretend that you have a younger sibling or cousin looking over your shoulder reading everything that you are writing. As you continue to think you are done, imagine them turning to you and asking 'but why?' You answer and again, they read, and again they ask 'but why?' As long as you can add an answer to 'but why?', then your analysis is not thorough enough and they will continue to tug on your shirt asking 'but why? but why? but why? but why?' -Ms. Frederick

What is a thesis statement?
A thesis statement is a single, grammatically correct sentence which states the premise of your paper.
Eg: Successfully teaching an elementary class a lesson in music appreciation requires a wide range of knowledge in several areas, including brain development, child psychology, learning modes, teaching styles, classroom management, music, age appropriateness, and basic lesson design.
Eg: Choreographing three dances to be featured in the Spring Dance Show is a tremendous undertaking, requiring expertise in all aspects of theatrical production in order to ensure the dances are successful from the perspective of the choreographer, performers, and the audience.
Eg: Various skill sets in several areas, from coding to marketing, are required in the creation of a unique software application for the App Store and effectively marketing it to the general public.
As you begin growing in your writing, do not think in terms of essay formats and the "five paragraph essay". Think in terms of "parts" or "sections". Each section will take as many paragraphs as necessary to throughly cover the point being made. If it helps you to use a previously learned essay format, fine. Just know when to start a new paragraph and don't cram several paragraphs of info into one, giant paragraph because you're stuck in the "5 paragraph" mode.
